The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process. The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased. Airlines for America, a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

☆ Alaska Airlines 2024 forecast tops estimates after loss from Boeing Max grounding

Alaska received $162 million from Boeing for the Jan. 5 accident, which caused the Federal Aviation Administration to briefly ground the planes. The accident has added additional regulator scrutiny on Boeing and slowed its deliveries of new Max planes, of which Alaska is a major customer. "Alaska [Airlines] needs Boeing, our industry needs Boeing and our country needs Boeing to be a leader in airplane manufacturing," he said. Alaska forecast adjusted earnings per share of between $2.20 and $2.40, above the $2.12 analysts polled by LSEG expected. Adjusting for one-time items, Alaska posted a net loss of 62 cents a share in the second quarter, less than the $1.05 per-share loss analysts were expecting, according to LSEG.

CNN —The US aviation industry has asked the Biden administration to pause approval of additional flights to and from China, saying Beijing’s “existing harmful anti-competitive policies” hurt American airlines and workers. The letter was signed by industry lobby group Airlines for America — whose members include American Airlines (AAL), Delta (DAL) and United (UAL) — and other unions representing aviation workers, including the Air Line Pilots Association. Chinese carriers were given approval by US officials to make 50 weekly round trips to and from the United States, up from 35, from March 31. “These actions demonstrated the clear need for the US government to establish a policy that protects US aviation workers, industry and air travelers,” it said. “It [boosting flights] will help the two peoples strengthen exchanges and enhance mutual understanding,” the ministry added.

It also converted previous orders for 30 of the shorter Max 8 version of the plane, which is currently flying, into additional Max 10 orders. That report showed no other orders for any version of the 737 Max. Besides American’s large Max order, Boeing also received orders for 28 of its widebody 777 jets during the month. Boeing also reported it delivered only 24 of the 737 Max jets in the month, and five 787 Dreamliners.

New York CNN —Flight cancellations across the country continue to cause headaches for thousands of travelers, and Southwest is topping the list of most-affected airlines for the second consecutive day. Saturday and Sunday saw more than 16,500 flights delays and nearly 3,000 cancellations across the United States, according to FlightAware. A Justice Department lawyer argued that the deal would push fares higher by 30% and leave fewer options for travelers on a budget. Duffy, the Justice Department lawyer, tried to close the door on more divestitures. If Spirit is acquired by JetBlue, Frontier would become the biggest discount carrier in the U.S., followed by Allegiant Air and new entrants Breeze and Avelo.
